The Dutch coach, who will take over as Manchester United manager after the World Cup, is keen to avoid Brazil in the next round and believes the hosts will win Group A later in the evening. Although he is frustrated Luiz Felipe Scolari's side will know the final standings before kicking off against Cameroon, van Gaal appreciates the value of obtaining at least a point on Monday.
"I think both teams are equally strong," he replied, when asked about the clash with Chile. "I expect it to be 50-50.
"Chile are incredibly passionate and extremely well organised. But I foresee a lot of opportunities because, like Spain, they are extremely eager to attack. They are also a team which always trusts in their own abilities. That could provide us with some opportunities from which we might be able to benefit."
When asked if the aim is to avoid Brazil, he replied: "Definitely. If I were allowed to choose, I'd rather not play against Brazil, although Croatia or Mexico aren't bad opponents either. But I think, at a World Cup, the host country always has an advantage."
Van Gaal has been impressed by the forwards on show in South America and is enjoying the entertainment provided during the tournament.
